I always forget how much I love the fall until it comes back around. I still associate it with the excitement of a new school year, even though I’ve been out of school for years. Now I see it as a time to start changing up all of my beauty routines to adjust and take advantage of the cooling weather.
Fragrance
The quickest way to transition from summer to fall is by switching up your everyday fragrance. I opt for something warmer, spicier, and smokier when the weather starts cooling down. My usual daily fragrance during the spring or summer is Fresh’s Rose Morning, but once fall weather hit I changed over to Maison Margiela Replica By the Fireplace. It’s slightly sweet, but very warm and smoky. It smells like toasting marshmallows on a fire. If you want to wear something more floral, I really love Glossier You any time of year. It has fresh, floral notes that work for spring and summer, but it also has the warmier musk notes to make it perfect for fall and winter, too.
Skincare
I gradually change my skincare between the seasons, and the changes I make for fall usually center around adding in more hydrating layers. The change in the weather always leaves my skin feeling dehydrated, and it usually isn’t in full-on dry winter mode. I find that lightweight, hydrating layers work best to plump up the skin and keep it in top shape during the fall. Right now I find my skin is lacking water, not oil, so I’m pumping it up with hyaluronic acid-heavy products and water-based creams. The Bioderma Hydrabio products have been my favorite so far - the serum especially is like giving my skin a big glass of water.
Bodycare
Like my facial skincare, I also add in some bodycare products. In the summer I only have to moisturize my legs, but come fall and winter the rest of my skin needs some love, too. Since I’m not used to moisturizing my whole body throughout the rest of the year (which maybe I should be doing?), I like to use something that doesn’t feel heavy or obtrusive. I love the Necessaire Body Lotion - it’s lightweight but so nourishing and hydrating. It doesn’t leave a greasy film, but it definitely keeps the skin from getting rough and scaly. I also like that it’s unscented, so it never interferes with my perfume.
Foundation
If you’ve read even one of my posts before, you’ll know I’m a glowy skin fiend. Sometimes the trend is to switch a glowy foundation for a matte one in the fall and winter, but I go glowy all year round. In fact, I need something dewier in the fall and winter to compensate for my skin being more dry. This fall I’m going to be reaching for the Surratt Dew Drop Foundation quite a lot. It has a very smooth and hydrating finish, so I know it will glide over any dry areas without catching, and it leaves a beautiful dewy sheen on the skin. It gives such a healthy look to the skin that pairs really well with the decent helping of blush I put on top.
Lips + Cheeks
Speaking of blush, I fully embrace the cliche of berry tones for fall. On my skintone, they provide such a nice flushed color on both lips and cheeks. If you have a warmer skintone and berries clash, though, I’d opt for a neutral/warm deeper rose (think Glossier’s Cloud Paint in Storm). Like the foundation, I like my blushes to have dewy finishes year-round, and this fall I’m going to be reaching for the Ilia Beauty Multi-stick in A Fine Romance. It’s the perfect berry shade, and it works equally well on both lips and cheeks. It has a sheer-ish quality to it that lets your skin show through, making it look like even more of a natural flush. It has a very creamy formula that feels a little thick, but it stays put all day without feeling sticky on the skin. They have several flattering shades, and of the 3 I have, A Fine Romance is my favorite.
